Dealing with jealousy and envy

Do you know the difference between jealousy and envy? And, importantly, how to overcome both of these feelings?

Until recently, I didn’t know the difference between jealousy and envy.

I though envy was simply ‘lighter’ than jealousy.

Less raging; less intense.

But then I heard that envy only involves two people.

While jealousy involves more than two.

So I might envy your house.

But feel jealous when you get close to my best friend.

Either way, I have a cure for both these feelings.

When I feel them rise inside, I have learned how to respond.

If I feel envious – of someone’s success, for example – I up my game.

I decide to work towards achieving something similar.

No one is above me, there are just people up ahead.

And I can catch up, if I work hard.

So can you.

Jealousy?

I bring the person close.

This helps me to crack through the veneer of perfection.

To see the flaws.

And it eases the strong jealous feeling.

So if I see someone trying to flirt with my husband?

I join them.

I befriend the flirter.

And the threat almost instantly dissipates.

My friend is getting close to someone new?

I welcome them into our friendship group.

If you feel envious or jealous, you can work through that.

It’s not easy, but it can be done.

It helps to know the difference, though.
