Just get one foot in the door

I used to work for this online content platform.

And the word rate they offered was shit.

But I didn’t have any other work, so I agreed to write for them.

As I was putting together these posts, I thought:

I’m worth more than what they’re offering.

So when it came to invoicing at the end of the month, I had an idea.

I decided to invoice for double what they’d said I’d be paid.

You know what happened?

They paid me double.

I did it every month.

And they never questioned me.

The moral of this story is twofold:

  1. Just get your foot in the door. Once in, you may well be able to get that day/word-rate up.
  2. If you run a team, check communication between accounts and content managers.

‘If you don’t ask, you don’t get’ springs to mind.

But I didn’t ask.

I quietly demanded.

And it worked.
